Stride the Divide - U.S.

Fundraiser Image This year I hope to walk from Mexico to Canada to raise awareness of a practical solution to one of the world's most impractical problems. I will begin in a small border town of Mexico and Southern California's desert and journey north 4,279 kilometres along the United States West Coast until I get to Canada. I will be living out of my rucksack and sleeping in my tent for its entirety. The trek will follow the Pacific Crest Trail which crosses through 7 national parks and 25 national forests. Beginning with 1,120 kilometres of desert before passing through the High Sierras and finally hitting the Cascades all the way to British Columbia. The walk is going to be a mammoth effort and if I dwell on it too long I soon become overwhelmed. The only thing I can do is dismiss my insecurities and focus on taking those beginning steps. Similarly, when confronted with addressing questions of poverty, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Certainly, we have a way to go to overcome its afflictions. However I firmly hold the belief that if we can muster the courage to take those principal steps and then the fortitude to take those subsequent, then we can astonish ourselves at how far we have the potential to go. Opportunity International are trailblazers in this regard, their hand up of microfinance promises to deliver an effective way to end poverty for an individual while ensuring those they service are treated with dignity and respect. This is something that I deeply desire to be a part of, I urge you to become a part of it also.

Where Donations Go

In spite of the challenges they face, women worldwide show inspiring resilience and determination to break out of the cycle of poverty. Studies show that when women have access to financial services, they have a significant impact on the quality of life for their families, especially their children. Your gift to Opportunity will empower women to develop new roles as income earners and community leaders. With access to transformational training, and critical financial products such as savings, loans and insurance, women in poverty can build financial security and create stability for their families, often for the first time in their lives. Opportunity operates under a model of sustainable success. Loans are granted. Loans are repaid and loaned again and again. As important, 95% of our loan clients are women and 99% of these loans are repaid in full.
