Hi friends! My name is Sarah Downey, and I am raising money for Opportunity International because I believe in the power of microfinance to overcome poverty.
I first learned about microfinance and Opportunity International during a middle school service project. Our class held a round robin tournament for nonprofit organizations and I chose to champion Opportunity International. Everything I learned drew me more and more to this amazing organization: its high rate of loan repayment, its focus on empowering individuals and communities, and its commitment to building God's kingdom here on Earth. My classmates agreed that this was the organization through which we wanted to serve. We came together to organize a silent auction full of our own belongings and raised over $700-- a large sum to a sixth grader! I remember an Opportunity International representative, Lori Olson, coming to my class to share the story of the loan we had funded, and seeing the real impact our humble effort had.
Fast forward 12 years, and I now have the means to serve others through Opportunity international beyond simply auctioning off my Lava Lamp. As many of you know, I am an avid runner and passionate about cereal grains as a fuel food for the world. I want to engage both of these passions to support Opportunity International, which is why I have chosen a marathon-themed fundraiser focused on microfinance in agriculture. I will be training through April and hope to run 1,000 training miles before my marathon. If you'd like to support OI through my marathon fundraiser, I'd love it if you would think of a rate-per-mile contribution-- just $0.01 per mile makes a difference! If math and mileage aren't your thing, though, Opportunity International will benefit from any amount donated.
Where Donations Go
Your gift to Opportunity will help small-scale farmers move from subsistence to commercial farming so they can feed their families and their communities. Opportunity provides these farmers with affordable, convenient agricultural finance services and the technical assistance they need to grow more food and increase their profits. Our strategy engages with farmers at every level of the value chain—from planting to harvesting to selling crops—to ensure their success.
