Hardworking single mother of two, Luz Oviedo lives in Carmen de Bolivar, Colombia with her children. In 2002, Luz lost her husband to violence in her region and was left to support her two children on her own. To make ends meet, she started a pig farming business, selling to community members and small, local butchers. It hasn’t been easy for Luz, and despite her best efforts, there was a time when she worried she would not be able to meet the daily needs of her children. Everything began to change for Luz when a friend introduced her to Opportunity International. Luz received financial training and a loan to invest in her business and purchase pig feed and other necessities. Because of these investments, Luz was able to raise more pigs and ultimately attract new customers and increase her sales. Looking to the future, Luz hopes her company can become the largest pig barn in her region and partner with big shops in the community. Thanks to the loan she received, Luz will be able to grow her business while ensuring her children receive a quality education.
