Auntie Koikoi is a single mother of three children in Tarkwa, the western region of Ghana. Being the sole caretaker for her family has been extremely challenging for Auntie, but she works hard to make sure that all of her children have everything they need and that they receive the best education. For thirty years, Auntie has sold local homemade dishes to her neighbors in her community to make a living. However, the prices of ingredients rose and Auntie was not able to make as much food as she used to. As a result, her business suffered. She knew she needed to find some assistance to help her sustain her business. Auntie heard about the loan and financial training she could receive from Opportunity International, and everything changed. With her loan, Auntie purchased her ingredients in bulk to keep her costs low. With more ingredients at hand, Auntie was able to make and sell a lot more food each day, which greatly increased her profits. She even used part of her proceeds to open up a second business selling footwear. Both of her businesses have stabilized her family’s income, and Auntie no longer struggles to provide for her children’s school fees or daily necessities. She looks forward to one day hiring employees for her businesses so that she can create jobs for those in need in her community.
