Charlene Darantinao does her best to make a living for her husband and son on Leyte Island in the Philippines. When her son was born, Charlene opened up a convenience store in her town to help save money for her son’s future. However, even with her husband’s income from working as a motorized tricycle driver, the couple struggled to afford all of their family’s daily needs including food. They were also concerned that they did not have enough money saved up for emergencies. Charlene feared that without the means or knowledge about how to expand her business, her family would not be able to improve their financial situation. When Charlene heard about the loan and financial training she could receive from Opportunity International, she knew she had found the solution she had been looking for. She used her loan to buy a wider selection of products and goods in bulk which attracted new customers to her store and increased her sales. She is excited to see the growth of her business, and the more sustainable income it provides for her family. Her dream is to continue to expand her shop to include selling animal feed so that she and her husband can bring their family out of poverty for good.
