Beatrice Kabonesa is a school teacher and single mother living in the city of Karuma Dam, Uganda. Because her teacher’s salary was not enough to fully support her four children on her own, a few years ago Beatrice opened a restaurant to supplement her income. However, the restaurant only made a small profit, and she was using most of it to pay her employees. When one employee stole money from her, Beatrice worried that she would need to close the restaurant. Beatrice regained hope for her restaurant when she heard about the loan and valuable financial training she could receive from Opportunity International. With her loan, she purchased new cooking utensils and pots that allowed her to make her dishes in bulk. This has greatly increased Beatrice’s weekly sales, and now she has been able to afford all of her children’s daily necessities as well as their school fees easily. Beatrice dreams of expanding her restaurant to attract more customers so that she can save money to purchase rental units for another stable source of income for her family.
