Mariam Nakayanja lives in Nyendo, Uganda. Her husband left her with six children to raise alone, and Mariam works hard to support them as best as she can. For a living Mariam sells bananas, which presents many challenges, including lack of sales when business is slow. When she isn't making enough income, Mariam struggles to meet the daily needs of her children, including paying their school fees. Mariam knew she needed a way to help support her family in the way they all deserved. When Mariam heard about Opportunity Bank from the radio and television, she was so motivated by their mission that she joined. Mariam invested half of her loan in her children's school fees and the other half in her business. Because of the loan from Opportunity, Mariam's business is growing. She is able to generate a higher income and continue paying her children's school fees. Mariam's future dream is to expand her business and build a house for her family.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do entrepreneurs become Opportunity International loan clients?

Opportunity International conducts interviews with prospective clients to get a better understanding of their situation, so we can construct a loan that’s tailored to their needs and capabilities.

If I help fund a loan, should I expect to be paid back?

When you help to fund a loan, you are making a donation to Opportunity International. When those funds are repaid by the client, the funds remain in the country where the original client’s loan was disbursed, so that it can help fund more loans. Your initial gift continues to have an impact after the first loan is repaid.
