Joel Hagenimana lives in Kicukiro, Rwanda, with his wife and their two school-aged children. For the past several years, Joel and his wife have owned and operated a small shop in town where they sell everyday necessities and food to local customers. They work long days to ensure their clients are satisfied, but despite their hard work, Joel and his wife struggle to make ends meet. Everything began to change for Joel and his wife when a friend introduced them to Opportunity International. After joining, they received financial training and a loan to purchase shelf-stable foods for their shop in bulk, including rice, sugar, salt, beans, and cooking oil. With a more extensive selection of food at a lower wholesale price, Joel and his wife were able to attract new customers and increase their sales and profit margin. Looking to the future, they are saving up for a car. Thanks to the loan they received, Joel and his wife can continue to grow their business, plan for the future, and send their children to school.
