Ruth Asilar lives in Panian, Philippines, with her husband and their four children. To provide for her family, Ruth operates a snack stand. However, she faced financial challenges, and she could not grow her business because her limited capital went toward paying for her children’s education. Ruth sought to expand her business so that she could provide for all her family’s needs, but she didn’t have the funds she needed to do so. Ruth found the solution to her financial troubles when a staff member from Opportunity International encouraged her to join the organization. After completing financial literacy training, Ruth received her first loan, which she invested in her business. The small financial boost allowed Ruth to make the improvements she needed, and now, she feels capable of supporting her family’s needs. Ruth says she is grateful for her partnership with Opportunity because not only does she have access to loans, but her family has benefited from the insurance program, too. Ruth applied for a second loan, which she plans to invest in her snack business with the goal of increasing her earnings. She wants to support her family as best as she can.
