Opportunity International Client Grace Angwen

Grace Angwen is a widow living in Oyam, Uganda, where she cares for her six children and two additional children she’s taken into her family. Grace and her family live near the Kamdini trading center, where Grace sells fruit to provide for her children. Despite her hard work, Grace has faced financial challenges because demand for fruit is seasonal. It is expensive to buy produce in the off-season, and Grace cannot make a good profit when she has to travel far for business. Everything began to change for Grace and her family when she discovered Opportunity International and decided to join the organization. After completing financial literacy training, Grace received her first loan, which she used to purchase additional fruit from another town. The small financial boost has had a multiplier effect for Grace’s business, and she now earns three times as much per day as she did before she partnered with Opportunity. The loan also enabled Grace to purchase a plot of land and build a house for her family. In the future, Grace’s dream is to educate her children up through the university level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do entrepreneurs become Opportunity International loan clients?

Opportunity International conducts interviews with prospective clients to get a better understanding of their situation, so we can construct a loan that’s tailored to their needs and capabilities.

If I help fund a loan, should I expect to be paid back?

When you help to fund a loan, you are making a donation to Opportunity International. When those funds are repaid by the client, the funds remain in the country where the original client’s loan was disbursed, so that it can help fund more loans. Your initial gift continues to have an impact after the first loan is repaid.
